What to Wear
ADVICE
Pick 3+ Diverse Outfits.
Make sure they are wrinkle-free. Then keep them that way until after the shoot.
- Casual — This usually involves jeans. Shorts or a sun dress also work.
- 2. Formal — What would you wear to someone’s wedding, to formal homecoming, or to prom? This is most likely the best choice for a formal outfit. Guys, if you have a suit, these almost always look incredible! You should really try some poses in a suit. Seriously. Do it.
- 3. Personality — What is your greatest passion? For sports, bring a complete uniform & equipment. For music, bring your instrument and wear concert attire. For hobbies, bring whatever you use for that hobby and the appropriate attire. For a specific career, wear whatever that occupation wears. Feel free to ask for ideas.
Changing Outfits
Some locations do not have public restrooms. I recommend wearing a tank top and spandex shorts underneath clothing, as long as it is not visible in photographs. Bringing a bedsheet for additional privacy may be a good idea, too.
Things to Avoid:
- Steer away from red, as well as any shade that has been a highlighter color. These colors will reflect on your face, and the photos will not look good. Solid-colored items of blues, greens, grays, and whites work best.
- Glasses with transition lenses! In fact, if you always wear glasses and could have the lenses removed entirely (optometrists often do this for free), you will eliminate any chance of glare.
- Don’t wear something that you don’t love… unless you’re a guy wearing a suit. You should totally do that.
- Avoid wearing clothing with busy patterns or much text
- Don’t overdo the make-up!
- Ladies and Guys, be sure that your undergarment choices work with each outfit! They should not be visible.
- Ladies and Guys, SHAVE on the day of your session!

Posing
This is the part that makes people the most nervous. Relax! We got this! We have many different posing examples that you can imitate, as well as some generalized suggestions below to help you look amazing and natural. These are not rules– just guidance… which we can ignore if it will look good.
FEMALES:
- When standing, your general goal is to make an “S” shape, creating triangular gaps with arms and/or legs. To do this, you will put most of your weight on one leg and pop that hip out.
- Lift arms away from your body to create separation between them and your torso. This is slimming and feminine.
- Turn your body so it is not straight-on to the camera. This is also slimming.
- Point your toes when sitting. This lengthens your legs.
- Engage your core and slightly point your tailbone away from the camera.
- Hair should never be on the shoulders on both sides. It just looks messy.
- Have soft, relaxed hands.
MALES:
- Square your shoulders to they are straight-on with the camera.
- Broaden your shoulders.
EVERYONE:
- Bring props! Having something to hold, touch, adjust, or play with solves the most common question of “What do I do with my hands?”
- Do the turtle! To prevent double-chin, stick your neck out toward the camera a little. Feels awkward. Looks great!
- Eyes should always point the same direction as your nose if you are not looking into the camera.
